A Summary of AWS Service End-of-Support and Maintenance Mode Transitions Announced as of June 30, 2026

Introduction

On June 30, 2026, the transition of multiple AWS services to maintenance mode, planned service sunsets (Sunset), and service discontinuations were announced.

The newly announced changes are: approximately 20 services/features moving to maintenance mode, 5 services scheduled for Sunset, and 2 services whose availability has already ended. Note that the overall snapshot of the AWS Lifecycle Changes page (56 items, etc.) listed in the appendix at the end of this article is a cumulative count that includes past announcements.

Category Definitions

This announcement is divided into the following three categories.

• Maintenance Mode (Maintenance): Existing customers can continue to use the service. New customer sign-ups are stopped. No new features will be developed, but bug fixes and security patches continue to be provided.
• Planned Service Termination (Sunset): The service end date is fixed. The service is inaccessible after the end date.
• End of Support: The service had already been shut down at the time of the announcement.

[Maintenance Mode] Amazon Kendra

AWS recommends migrating to Bedrock Managed Knowledge Base (BMKB).
However, at present, according to the official documentation, there is a gap: Kendra supports 32 connectors while BMKB supports 7 (as of July 2026). For unsupported connectors, ingestion via S3 is the alternative.
In addition, the following features are not supported in BMKB (some have workarounds).

No migration deadline (service end date) has been set, so there is no immediate impact on existing customers.

[Maintenance Mode] Amazon Q Business

The successor service is Amazon Quick (an integrated AI assistant extending the former QuickSight).
With the BYOI (Bring Your Own Index) feature, existing Q Business indexes can be connected to Quick as they are.
On the other hand, Q Apps require manual migration to Quick Flows, and Guardrails and Actions are not carried over via BYOI, so they must be reconfigured natively in Quick.

[Maintenance Mode] Amazon Bedrock Agents Classic

Amazon Bedrock Agents has been renamed "Amazon Bedrock Agents Classic" and moved to maintenance mode.
There is no change to the API namespace, and existing agents can continue to be used as they are.

However, new models will not be added to Agents Classic going forward.
AWS recommends migrating to AgentCore harness (declarative) or Code-defined agents (any framework).

[Maintenance Mode] AWS Directory Service – Simple AD

This is a simple Samba-based Active Directory. There is no impact on existing directories and users, and existing customers can continue to create new directories.

As alternatives, AWS Managed Microsoft AD (when a full-fledged AD environment is needed) and AD Connector (proxy-style connection to your own AD) are recommended.
In environments integrated with WorkSpaces and similar services, changes to the directory service may affect other services, so the migration plan requires careful consideration.

[Sunset] Amazon WorkSpaces – PCoIP

This is due to the end of vendor support for HP Anyware (PCoIP).

The migration target is the DCV protocol, and according to the official documentation, no additional charge is incurred for the protocol migration itself.
The migration path differs depending on the OS version.

• OS is a current version → Modify Protocol (completes in about 40 minutes according to the official documentation)
• OS is an older version → Migrate WorkSpace (changes the OS and protocol simultaneously)

Note that PCoIP Zero Client devices do not support DCV, so hardware replacement is required.

[Sunset] Amazon WorkSpaces – Pool

The migration target is WorkSpaces Applications (formerly AppStream 2.0), and existing images can be imported into WorkSpaces Applications.

[Sunset] AWS Managed Services (AMS) Advanced

Listed alternatives are AMS Accelerate, AWS Support Unified Operations, partner solutions, and self-managed.
Migrating the workloads themselves is not necessary; only the management layer is migrated. The main task is redesigning RFC/change management workflows with native AWS tools.

[Sunset] AWS re:Post Private

As an alternative, Stack Overflow for Teams (Stack Internal) is the closest option.
Data export is possible via a TAM to S3 in CSV/JSON format, but according to the official documentation, the final deadline for export requests is June 15, 2027. You need to complete data evacuation before the service ends.

[Sunset] Amazon SageMaker AI – Profiler

Amazon SageMaker AI Profiler will be discontinued on June 30, 2027.

Other Services Moving to Maintenance Mode

The following services and features will also move to maintenance mode. For all of them, July 30, 2026 is the new usage stop date (only IoT Device Defender Detect is August 31).

Amazon Cognito Sync

Cognito Sync, the data synchronization feature of Amazon Cognito, moves to maintenance mode. Using AWS AppSync or Amazon DynamoDB is recommended as an alternative.

The Detect feature of IoT Device Defender moves to maintenance mode. The new usage stop date is August 31, 2026, one month later than other services.

Summary

In this batch announcement, about 20 services and features moved to maintenance mode, and 5 services were designated for Sunset. The generational shift in generative AI services (Kendra → BMKB, Q Business → Quick, Bedrock Agents → AgentCore) is particularly notable. Although maintenance mode has no immediate impact, no new features can be expected, so it should be treated as a trigger to consider migration. Among the Sunset services, WorkSpaces PCoIP and Pool are likely to have a large impact in terms of number of users, so those affected are advised to prepare a migration plan early.
