A new feature has been added in July 2025 allowing connection from Tableau Cloud to dbt Semantic Layer.

I tried this feature and will summarize it in this article.

Preparation

Generate a dbt Semantic Layer service token for a dbt project linked to the following repository in dbt Cloud.

On the target dbt project screen, press Generate service token and follow the steps shown in the image below.

The generated token will only be displayed once, so make sure to save it.

Connecting Tableau Cloud to dbt Semantic Layer

Let's connect Tableau Cloud to dbt Semantic Layer using the token we obtained earlier and other required information.

In Tableau Cloud, click New and then Published Data Source.

At the Connect to Data screen, click on dbt Semantic Layer by dbt Labs from the Connectors tab.

Enter the information you confirmed in dbt Cloud and press Sign In.

The connection is now complete! From here, you can select any Metrics you want, publish the data source, and create visualizations in your workbooks.

Although the content was simple, I was able to connect from Tableau Cloud to dbt Semantic Layer and summarized what I tried.
