新サービス Amazon WorkSpaces Core が発表されました

本日AWSより新サービスとなるAmazon WorkSpaces Coreが発表されました。

本記事ではこのサービスに関して本日時点で分かる点を解説します。

Amazon WorkSpaces Core とは？

Amazon WorkSpaces Coreはその名前のとおりAmazon WorkSpacesに関連するサービスです。
先のアナウンスだとかなりふわっとした事しか言っておらず、より詳細な話はこちらのブログをご覧いただくほうが良いでしょう。

このブログによれば、

Amazon WorkSpaces Core is a fully managed, infrastructure only, VDI offering that includes a set of APIs for customers and third-party VDI software providers wanting to integrate with Amazon WorkSpaces purpose built VDI infrastructure.
WorkSpaces Core allows IT administrators to continue using their familiar VDI software solution and end users can continue using their existing VDI client software. This results in a consistent end-user experience.

とあり、要するにAmazon WorkSpacesのインフラ基盤をAPIの形で提供するサービスで、例えばVMware Horizonの様な他社VDIソフトウェアからAmazon WorkSpacesのインフラを扱える様にするためのものです。
IT管理者にとっては既存のVDIソフトウェアを使いつつもAWSのインフラを利用できるメリットがあるという形になります。

現時点ではVMware HorizonでAmazon WorkSpaces Coreを利用した機能を提供することが発表されています。

Amazon WorkSpaces Coreの具体的なAPIについてはまだ公開されていないため実際どの様な仕組みかは一切推測できません...
とはいえ、VMwareの発表の中で

This integration will deliver the optimized user experience that enterprise VDI customers have enjoyed with Horizon and Blast protocol, the simplicity of native cloud capacity provided by Amazon WorkSpaces Core, and the flexibility to choose and customize VDI deployments on-premises or desktop-as-a-service (DaaS) on Amazon within the same hybrid environment. Best of all, everything mentioned can be done from a single pane of glass on Horizon with end-to-end management workflows, at scale. You will be able to manage all your routine day-to-day workflows from Horizon, while Amazon WorkSpaces provides the underlying capacity management through the APIs.

とあり「インフラはAmazon WorkSpacesだが通信プロトコル、管理コンソール、利用クライアントはVMware Horizonのまま」といった構成が採れる様です。
この点からAmazon WorkSpaces CoreはAPIとしてはかなり薄いネイティブなものだと推測されます。

利用可能リージョンと利用料金

Amazon WorkSpaces Coreを利用可能なリージョンはAWSのアナウンスによれば、

Amazon WorkSpaces Core is available in all AWS Regions except Africa (Cape Town).

とのことです。
ここで気になる点がひとつあり、従来Amazon WorkSpacesは利用可能なリージョンとAZが制限されています。

• Availability Zones for Amazon WorkSpaces

アナウンスで言っているのが「通常のAmazon WorkSpacesでサポートされるリージョンのうちケープタウンを除く」なのか「本当に全てのAWSリージョンのうちケープタウンを除く」なのかがはっきりしていません。

現在Amazon WorkSpaces Coreの料金ページだけは公開されており、こちらを見る限りは「通常のAmazon WorkSpacesでサポートされるリージョンのうちケープタウンを除く」となる様です。

  • 現状英語版のみ更新ずみ

そして利用料金に関しては実際に利用するWorkSpace環境の時間課金/月別課金のみでAPIの呼び出し費用といったものは無い様です。
要は通常のAmazon WorkSpacesと同じ価格体系ということです。

価格感は若干安めの設定となっています。
これはAWS側はVDIインフラのみの提供となるためだそうです。
ただし、

In addition to the costs for Amazon WorkSpaces Core you can purchase 3rd party VDI management software licensing separately if you don’t already have licenses and any additional OS or software you want to run on the virtual desktop.

と言う事で、他社VDIソフトウェアのライセンス費は別途となってますので注意しておくと良いでしょう。

補足 : Amazon WorkSpaces Family

今回の発表を受けて

• Amazon WorkSpaces Core
• Amazon WorkSpaces Web

の3サービスを総称して「Amazon WorkSpaces Family」と表記する様にサービスページが更新されました。

これはAWS Transfer FamilyやAWS Snow Familyと同じ流れですね。

最後に

ざっくりですが以上となります。

一般利用者向けでは無いサービスの様でなかなか詳細な情報を得ることができませんでした。
今後のアナウンスに期待したい感じです。
